Hurricane Erin weakened to a Category 3 hurricane Sunday as its outer bands continued to lash the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico with heavy rains and tropical-storm force winds.

Hurricane Erin is growing larger, and its expected impacts are likely to stretch far beyond its size.

"Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form during the latter part of the week."
