Apple has issued a legal challenge against the British government over a demand to create a backdoor for encrypted iCloud accounts, as reported by Financial Times. The company has filed a complaint in the hopes to reverse the order.

Apple has begun legal action to resist a secret demand by the U.K. government for access to iPhone users’ data. Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the Financial Times reports that the company has made an appeal to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, seeking (likely on grounds of U.S. national security) to have the order quashed.

Apple has reportedly lodged a ‘first of its kind’ appeal to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT), an independent judicial body which oversees legal complaints made against public authorities or intelligence agencies in the UK if they commit a potentially unlawful action.

Company wants to discourage other governments from using the same tactics; the appeal also likely objects to Apple being singled out for this requirement, analysts said.

Reason reported on the United Kingdom's demand for access to any Apple user's digital information stored in its cloud storage service, iCloud. Since those data are end-to-end encrypted by default, this would require the tech giant to create an intentional vulnerability in its security protocols—the likes of which could be exploited by sophisticated criminals or hostile governments.
