Observant Muslims worldwide will soon be united in a ritual of daily fasting from dawn to sunset as the Islamic holy month of Ramadan starts.

Muslims will begin fasting during the month of Ramadan this weekend. The sighting of the new moon heralds the beginning of the month of Ramadan. Parts of the Middle East have already announced that the first day of Ramadan will be tomorrow (Saturday).

The crescent moon of Ramadan was not sighted in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, and Brunei. As a result, the first fast of the holy month will be observed on Sunday.

Ramadan is determined by the Islamic lunar calendar which begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. In Malaysia on Friday, the Islamic authorities conducted a moon sighting to determine the date of Ramadan.

The first ‘roza’ (fast) will be observed on Sunday even as the ‘Taraweeh’ prayers will begin in all mosques Saturday.
