European Union leaders are trying to work out whether they can keep the Ukrainian war effort going if Donald Trump decides to shut off support from the US.

Europe alone cannot shoulder the financial strain of supporting Ukraine against the ongoing Russian invasion, Hungarian leader Viktor Orban said. He warned that closely-allied President-elect Donald Trump will likely steer Washington out of the conflict.

European leaders have discussed how to help Ukraine fend off Russia without Washington’s support, even as they try to convince the president-elect not to cut aid to Kyiv.
