The family of a former professional football player who died in Oakland police custody Saturday said he was struggling with mental health issues prior to his death.

Mark Sanchez is accused of seriously injuring a truck driver, who stabbed him in return, outside a hotel in what prosecutors say was a dispute over a parking place.

Former Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri also is among the 52 nominees. Because Vinatieri was a finalist for last year’s class, he automatically advances to the final 15 for the 2026 class.

University of San Francisco Athletics Director Larry Williams, who spent eight seasons in the NFL, has died, USF announced last week. He was 62 years old. Williams died while working out at War Memorial Gym on the University of San Francisco campus, according to a letter from school president Salvador D. Aceves.
