The bond market was closed Monday for the Columbus Day holiday. Oil prices moved up, as West Texas Intermediate futures traded around $59.80 a barrel. Among exchange traded funds, the Invesco QQQ TrustQQQ rose 1.7%. Also, the SPDR S&P 500 ETFSPY moved up 1.1% ahead of Monday's market open.

Global markets swung sharply on Monday, as investors assessed efforts to temper a renewed outbreak of hostility in the simmering trade war between the United States and China.

“Resorting to threats of high tariffs is not the right way to engage with China,” a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said Sunday, in Beijing’s first comments on the threat.
