Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday that he was “optimistic” the Senate could vote to reopen the government by the end of the week if lawmakers make progress over the next couple days.

Senate Republicans are in a deadlock with Democrats over the government shutdown, with various ideas being proposed to break the stalemate, and President Trump suggesting that eliminating the filibuster could help Republicans win future elections.

Voters in races across the country backed Democrats, including in New York’s mayoral race and contests for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, rejecting President Donald Trump’s late and lightweight push for his preferred candidates.

The DFL is projected to keep control of the Minnesota Senate after two seats were up for election Tuesday. Democrats are expected to keep a 33-32 advantage in the state Senate, after the resignation of DFL Sen. Nicole Mitchell and the death of Republican Sen. Bruce Anderson left two spots open.
