A string of tornadoes touched down in multiple states as severe weather stretched from Texas to Michigan.

Snowflakes, rain and winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour were in the Chicago forecast for the end of the work week, with the National Weather Service warning of “damaging” winds that could down trees and lead to widespread power outages.

At least 30 homes were destroyed and 500 buildings were impacted by the EF-3 tornado that barreled through Kankakee County Tuesday night, officials said.

Officials say several tornadoes have torn through parts of Illinois and Indiana, downing trees and power lines in an area south of Chicago and overwhelming the 911 center with emergency calls.

Lake Village, Indiana is recovering after an EF-3 tornado destroyed homes and businesses, killed two elderly residents, and prompted an outpouring of community support as volunteers, utility crews and state officials work to restore power and provide aid.
