CBS Chicago highlights stories that celebrate the theme for Black History Month 2025: African Americans and labor.

It’s impossible to celebrate Black History Month without highlighting the accomplishments of a Waco man who went above and beyond the call of duty to defend our country. Doris Miller was the first African-American recipient of the Navy Cross — for his display of extraordinary bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor – but his story goes much deeper than one moment of bravery.

Typically, Black History Month is flooded with small history lessons, remembering our ancestors and prominent leaders as well as acknowledging the Black firsts of every category of life. However, what made this month special were the series of events that occurred that shined a light on how brilliant (and gangsta) the Black community is.

Those in attendance agree that black history is really all about personal aggrandizement, not common sacrifice and struggle.

With Black History Month now over, Black students took the time to reflect on the month and its significance.

Sen. Tim Scott is the longest-serving Black senator in U.S. history, and the first Black chair of a standing Senate committee in his role atop the powerful Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

Woodson also founded Associated Publishers, which, in addition to publishing the Journal of Negro History, prepared kits for teachers at all educational levels. Woodson took advantage of the contradictions built into de jure segregation to reach the majority of African American school children in their segregated schools.

Happy Black History Month. Wait. What? Yeah, February identifies as the month designated for acceleration of Black history learning although a personal agenda desires 365-day recognition. A month, and the shortest one at that,
