David Gergen, a veteran of Washington politics and an adviser to four presidents in a career spanning decades in government, academia and media, has died. He was 83.

David Gergen, 83, a political insider who advised four former US presidents, died in Massachusetts on July 10.

He served under Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton before becoming a top editor and a familiar TV pundit. “Centrism doesn’t mean splitting the difference,” he said.
