Up to 1,400 people were killed in last year's anti-government protests in Bangladesh, most of them by security forces, the United Nations estimates. The extradition of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a bilateral issue, a senior UN official said on Wednesday. The United Nations Human Rights Office in Geneva today launched the “OHCHR Fact-Finding Report: Human Rights Violations and Abuses related to the Protests of July and August 2024 in Bangladesh”.

The UN has accused Bangladesh's former administration of committing crimes against humanity during last year's protests, citing hundreds of extrajudicial killings and systematic attacks. The report documents widespread violence and repression orchestrated by the government,

The United Nations report, which is based on an inquiry into the unrest in Bangladesh last year, estimated that around 1,400 protesters were killed, while thousands were injured.

There are grounds to believe extrajudicial killings took place with the ‘knowledge and direction’ of the leadership, said the United Nations human rights body.
