Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a memorandum that could soon give highway patrol officers some of the power of federal immigration agents.

Thailin Williams, 17, and Deshan Jones, 19, have both been charged with first-degree murder and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Less than two weeks after President Donald Trump took office, fear and panic has spread through immigrant communities across the Tallahassee area.

"FHP is equipped and hard at work to enforce illegal immigration laws in Florida," the agency said in a social media post.

Advocacy groups on Tuesday traveled to Tallahassee to contribute to the conversations, which have many immigrants concerned about the future. Leaders from these groups including The Florida Immigrant Coalition stood in front of the press, essentially dissecting the proposed bill and the impacts on their communities.

The act would name Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, the state’s chief immigration officer, who would oversee immigration enforcement and be the state’s liaison to the federal government.
