Utah appears to be the first state ready to put a full ban on fluoride in public water systems under a bill that doesn’t allow cities or communities to decide whether to add the cavity-preventing mineral.

Utah could soon become the first state to ban the mineral fluoride in public drinking water, according to legislation in the state. House Bill, 81 introduced by Rep. Stephanie Gricius and Sen. Kirk A. Cullimore, both Republicans, was approved by the Utah State Senate on Friday.

A bill before the governor would prohibit adding fluoride to water systems. The move could affect children’s health, experts warned.
