Target’s long-time CEO Brian Cornell will step down from the top job on Feb. 1, 2026, when current COO Michael Fiddelke will succeed him.

Target's chief operating officer, Michael Fiddelke, is set to succeed current CEO Brian Cornell in 2026. Cornell will transition to the role of executive chair of the board of directors. The change of positions announcement comes amid Target's sluggish sales and consumer boycotts.

Cornell is the current CEO of Target. He began his executive position in 2014. Previously, Cornell worked with various major retailers in the United States, including as Safeway’s chief marketing officer and executive vice president, and he was on the board of directors for OfficeMax and The Home Depot.
