Since its inception over 135 years ago, the Pasadena Public Library has attained a unique position as a very highly regarded educational and cultural resource. The library is an essential partner in the educational, social and recreational well-being of Pasadena's residents.

Hastings Branch serves seven elementary schools and eight preschools and one high school in the immediate area, offering outreach storytimes and library skills lessons or in-library visits with book checkout.

Due to the Eaton Canyon fires some Pasadena Public Library Branches have been closed. On November 8, 2022, Pasadena voters decided to maintain a special revenue source for Pasadena Public Library programs and services by voting to pass Measure L, the Pasadena Public Library Services Continuation Measure.

Pasadena Public Library was founded December 26, 1882 as private subscription library under the name “Pasadena Library and Village Improvement Society.” The Library’s founding thus predates the City’s incorporation by four years.

Home to the system’s Armenian language collection, Santa Catalina is one of the oldest branch libraries in the Pasadena system, dating back to 1913. The present branch building opened in 1931. The branch’s staff can accommodate both English and Armenian speaking patrons.
