🎉Hooray 🎉the RRS Sir David Attenborough has completed ice trials during its maiden voyage to Antarctica. This was a critical milestone in the commissioning of Britain’s new polar research ship. The purpose of ice trials is to test the ship’s capability and performance in ice. The team tested the ship’s capability over 10 days in January. They tested the ship through ice at different power levels and speeds, and performed a range of manoeuvres such as reversing and turning. The team enlisted th

We started another podcast! It's called BEYOND THE ICE - where we unpack newsworthy polar climate and ecosystems science, in nice easy terms ✅ This month, climate scientist Dr Ella Gilbert talks us through the Antarctic sea ice lows that sent records tumbling through 2023. What does sea ice do for global temperatures? And what could this mean for our future climate? We’ve collected the oldest ice core, now it’s time to analyse it! 🔎💻 The New Scientist have a new icy-cool video, speaking to BAS scientists about the huge European collaboration, Beyond EPICA. The experts touch on the whole process, from core collection, to sample analysis across Europe. The ice core could tell us about the past 1.5 million years (!!) of climate history, helping scientists predict how our climate may change in the future. To watch the full video, head to the New Scientist’s w

Landing at Wolf's Fang runway, a staging camp on the Antarctic continent 🇦🇶 The team are on their way to Halley Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf. They were meant to get to Halley today, but weather on the rest of their route is causing delays. Not a bad view to wait with though, eh? To get to Halley, the team fly from Heathrow to Cape Town in South Africa, then on to Wolf’s Fang. This is where Station Leader Dan McKenzie and the team are now. They’re waiting for a window of good weather

“It looks like magic, doesn’t it?” We've never seen anyone so enthusiastic to crush ice – but a team of scientists are studying the cracking of ice, and they’re pretty hyped! New Scientist spoke to members of the RIFT-TIP project led by BAS, who are studying the floating Brunt Ice Shelf to investigate how icebergs calve and how ice shelf fractures grow. This super cool project features: ❄️ Field work at Halley VI Research Station. 🛰️ Satellite observations of the ice shelf cracks. 🥼 Ice physic

Remember back in January when that iceberg the size of Greater London calved from the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica? Well, in the months since, the glacier has started to flow much more quickly into the ocean. Why? It's no longer connected to the sea bed under the McDonald Ice Rumples. This blockage had stabilised Brunt's movement for roughly 60 years. The evidence to date is that this is all part of the natural lifecycle of the glacier, and not related to climate change - an example of how much

Ever wondered what it's like to dive in the freezing waters of Antarctica? 🤿 In today's episode of ICEWORLD podcast, meet Jack Gordon & Mike Lindsell, Field Dive Officers at Rothera Research Station! These two are no strangers to braving cold water immersion down to -1.8°C during winter. Their job is to look after the safety of marine scientists as they study life deep in Antarctic waters. In this episode, host Nadia Frontier chats to Jack about his adventures during his 7th season South - from

The RRS Sir David Attenborough has departed Rothera for the last time this season, marking the start of our winter season and the end of another year of exciting science! We couldn't possibly list all of the amazing things that happened this season, but some highlights include: 🧊 Sailing around an iceberg twice the size of London 🍞 Using three tonnes of flour to make bread at Rothera 🐳 Counting lots of (hungry) humpback whales 🔋 Installing new solar and battery technology to reduce carbon em

Ice road truckers, eat your heart out! 😎 This is the spectacular journey back to Halley Research Station from the cliff edge of the Brunt Ice Shelf. The team worked incredibly hard over 9 days to meet the Malik Arctica, which pulled up alongside the ice shelf around New Year 😮 This was the first relief of Halley Research Station by sea in several years! They offloaded crucial supplies, and also took away 6 years of waste. 🎥 Cheers to the hardworking team for this amazing footage! | British An

The annual migration begins! ✈️ Ahead of our science season in Antarctica, the BAS aircraft have started their long journey across the world. The BAS red Dash 7 and Twin Otter aircraft set off from Canada, (where they are maintained and do some summer science work) flying all the way down North and South America. The journey to Punta Arenas on the tip of Chile takes around 10 days, before they make the final hop over the Southern Ocean to Rothera Research Station! #aviationlovers #aviationdaily
