Just starting a batch of these finials. I could do the cove with my skew but it’s quicker, safer and easier with the gouge. When cutting half a cove upto a bead etc. remember you can cut with the wing as well as the tip. This clip shows how you start with the tip and the cut progresses to the wing as you cut enabling you to cut the whole cove in one sweep. Wether it’s 300mm dia Walnut or 1” Oak ball I use the same 1” skew because that gives me the best finish at speed but It’s not always about the tools. Find something you’re comfortable with and practice a lot then it makes it look easy. These two jobs could have been done with a flat skew, gouge, round skew, beading/parting tool, carbide or many others just because I or anyone else uses a tool does necessarily make it the right tool for you.
