Check out amazing footage of a graceful Swallow-tailed Kite catching lizards by Photographer-in-Residence R J Wiley. Swallow-tailed Kites spend spring and summer breeding season in Florida and other parts of the South. They often make nests at the Sanctuary, and visitors can sometimes see the birds soaring overhead from the boardwalk. The nesting season for these beautiful raptors is now in full swing. In Florida, eggs are typically laid in March and require around 28 days to incubate. Both pare

It's swallow-tailed kite season, so the kite rule is in full effect. Don’t know what the kite rule is? Let me introduce you. When you see a swallow-tailed kite, it doesn’t matter where you are – whether you are at work, at school, in the car, at home – you look up to the sky, point, and yell at the top of your lungs, "Kite, kite, kite!" This alerts everybody that there is a swallow-tailed kite and that you were the first to see it. Caution: please drive safely and don’t get in trouble at school

It’s a bird, It’s a plane, It’s…a Migrating Swallow-tail kite! These striking black-and-white raptors are migrating back from the warm weather of South America to our vibrant Sunshine State. They return to Florida in early March to breed, weaving nests of twigs and Spanish moss high in cypress and pine trees. More social than most raptors, they often form loose colonies above prey-rich swamps and savannas. Look up! You might spot them gliding gracefully on the hunt for insects, frogs, lizards, a

⚠️Rare Patient Intake⚠️ This Swallow-Tailed Kite was found in Plantation Florida on the ground by a tree. The rescuers discovered that it was lethargic and brought it into our center. When it arrived, our veterinary staff found that it was extremely dehydrated and short of breath. We rarely see these birds of prey this far south but that is a great sign for the biodiversity of our local ecosystem. If you find a sick, injured or orphaned animal in the wild give us a call at 954-524-4302, we are o

A juvenile swallow-tailed kite was recently brought to FWH after it was discovered to have plastic wrapped around its legs. It was very young and unable to be re-nested. Our staff noticed it wouldn’t eat from the bowls, so they slowly started stacking the food higher up, and sure enough, the kite started eating just fine! We transferred it to the Avian Reconditioning Center, where they specialize in swallow-tailed kites. Once it’s old enough they will release it back into the wild! #FloridaWildl
