There are loads more examples of invertebrates sheltering vertebrates in the oceans, than on land. They’re eons older and that’s maybe not the reason, except that they were already there when fish got spines. Kind, voluptuous grannies of the sea, with frilly Victorian petticoats and unruly wisps of grey hair, hot soup in the pot for the kids, who have muddy feet and can’t sit still.
