We’re so excited to share the next step in the Digging for Erlestoke journey with you… 📖 ✍️ When excavations began in 2023, we made sure to capture the process on film. 📽️ You can now hear firsthand from the men at HMP Erlestoke, what it meant to them to be included in excavations and what they uncovered during the 4 week project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Watch our team guide them through an archaeological dig from start to finish and hear what effect the project had, not j

Go team! After c. 3500 years in the ground, a new chapter begins for our urn from a recently discovered Bronze Age barrow in Derbyshire. Found inverted and lifted intact, preservation of the burnt bone contents should be v. high, and so provide lots of info on the person (or people) interred within. | Wessex Archaeology

Take a closer look at our #SheffieldCastle dig with these NEW 3D models! 🏰⛏️ 👉 Medieval castle walls, one of the highlights of our excavations so far. Made up from rough sandstone blocks and around 2 metres thick, it may have formed part of an external defensive wall. 👉 Two cementation furnaces used in steel production. These were built into a large sandstone structure, likely formed of medieval stonework from the former castle. 👉 A slaughterhouse storage room, part of the so-called ‘Killing

The fascinating story of The Moors at Arne continues! 🏺 We have uncovered the remains of an industrial-scale Roman pottery production site near to Poole Harbour, as part of ongoing work with Kier, Environment Agency, RSPB England and Natural England to adapt over 150 hectares of land into a diverse wetlands habitat. A whopping 17,000 fragments of pottery and two kilns have been uncovered that tell us the Romans were making a type of pottery on this site called Black Burnished ware, fitting into

Recent evidence has securely tied the construction of Sheffield Castle’s motte to the Norman period, all thanks to the remains of a fire. But how did archaeologists go about dating a patch of burnt ground? Enter the mind-boggling world of archaeomagnetic dating... Whilst radiocarbon dating uses the decay of carbon in archaeological remains, archaeomagnetic dating looks at their magnetic properties. When we burn materials, the iron content reorients itself towards magnetic North. Since we know th

The people have spoken! We dug into the data and found your 5 favourite artefacts of 2024… 🪮 A decorated bone comb from an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, complete with lice and eggs. It was discovered near the person’s waist and was probably once held within a bag which hasn’t survived. ⚱️ Decorated Iron Age pottery, found alongside four roundhouses. One sherd had some curiously crude doodles, were these markings made by a child or simply first attempts? 🪙 This token, known as a Nuremberg jetton, was f
