The BC Wildfire Service is preparing to conduct a larger-scale planned ignition on the Doctor Creek (N21257) wildfire to help support crews gain containment on the southeast perimeter of the fire. The ignition will begin today (Sept. 4, 2020), as early as 12 p.m. Mountain Time (MT) and will tie into the smaller-scale ignition that was successfully completed yesterday afternoon (Sept. 3, 2020). A wildfire starts, we respond and bring it to under control, but then what? Why does it sometimes stay on the map for days or weeks? Even if you can no longer see smoke and flames, it doesn't necessarily mean the fire is completely extinguished. A fire can continue to burn underground or can still be considered active even when flames and smoke are not highly visible.
