An explosion at Gresford colliery in North Wales claimed the lives of 266 miners on this day in 1934. In commemoration, Durham miner and musician Robert Saint composed ‘Gresford’, dedicating it to “the memory of all miners who have perished in the mines.'' It was performed publicly for the first time at the 1938 Durham Miners' Gala.
