In 1956, McKinley Thompson Jr. became the first Black designer hired by a major American automaker. While working for Ford Motor Company, he created the Warrior, a rugged, easy-to-build vehicle designed for developing African countries. His prototype, build on a Renault 10 chassis, featured a buoyant plastic body and removeable top.
