At the Port of Long Beach, the Portugal-flagged, 5,500 TEU containership Mississippi (chartered by ZIM) suffered a container stack collapse. A total of 67 boxes fell into the harbor during discharging operations on September 9. Several containers struck the Stax 2 clean air barge, used for shoreside power, causing damage that is still under review. Some boxes were badly damaged, while others sank or drifted across the harbor. The U.S. Coast Guard established a 500-yard safety zone, deployed vess

Tomorrow we celebrate the official completion of Long Beach Container Terminal at Middle Harbor. The fully complete terminal handled containers for the first time in 2016. Since then the terminal has expanded to 300 acres, including the creation of 50 acres of new land as two slips were filled in. LBCT can now handle 3.3 million TEUs annually while being the greenest terminal in the United States. Bravo to everyone involved in the construction and completion of this monumental accomplishment. |
