Although you may have heard sloths be called two-toed and three-toed sloths however this is actually not anatomically correct. As both sloths possess three ‘toes’ on their hind limbs and the difference actually lies in their ‘fingers’. Therefore three-fingered and two-fingered is more analogically correct. There are now many scientific publications that recognise this as the correct terminology for these animals. 🦥 | The Sloth Conservation Foundation

THREE-FINGERED SLOTH ADOPTS TWO-FINGERED BABY! These two sloths are not only different species, but they belong to two completely different families, separated by over 30 million years of evolution! Only 3 cross-species adoptions like this have ever been documented in the wild - and it has never been seen before in sloths! The circumstances surrounding this pairing are not entirely clear, but SloCo founder and sloth expert Dr. Rebecca Cliffe has some ideas about what might have led to this unusu

Three-toed sloth The three-toed or three-fingered sloths are arboreal neotropical mammals. They are the only members of the genus Bradypus and the family Bradypodidae. The four living species of three-toed sloths are the brown-throated sloth, the maned sloth, the pale-throated sloth, and the pygmy three-toed sloth. In complete contrast to past morphological studies, which tended to place Bradypus as the sister group to all other folivorans, molecular studies place them nested within the sloth su

Our Project Manager, Tamara, discovered this gorgeous three-fingered sloth in her backyard. Sloths, monkeys, raccoons, snakes, and many other wildlife species share their territories with us. Can we peacefully coexist with wildlife? Absolutely! Through research and various conservation initiatives, we work to ensure the survival of sloths and other wildlife in urbanized areas. It’s time for a dip! The pygmy three-toed sloth is the slowest moving land mammal in the world. They move around two metres per minute! However, when swimming, they’re capable of moving around three times faster. Their diet of leaves generates large amounts of gas in the sloth’s stomach, helping to keep them buoyant. | BBC Earth

We find we are very often asked about the differnce between calling sloths - two-toed and three-toed VS Two-fingered and Three-fingered. Referring to their fingers makes much more sense anatomically. We believe that the use of ‘toes’ came from the translation from Spanish to English. • • • • #Wildlife #Sloths #SlothFacts #SlothLife #AnimalFacts #SlothLover | The Sloth Conservation Foundation
