The Viking Herald summarizes a tantalizing theory: sometime in the late 10th century, Icelandic mariner Björn Breiðvíkingakappi sailed so far off course that Atlantic currents swept him all the way to Mesoamerica. His story survives only in Breiðvíkingakappa þáttr, a short tale embedded in Icelandic saga manuscripts. There, Björn lands in a lush, hot country, marries a local woman, and is remembered for teaching ironworking and ship carpentry before sailing back north — or disappearing entirely.
