In 1980, a young Canadian named Terry Fox, who had lost his right leg to cancer, began running across the country. He called his challenge the Marathon of Hope with the aim of raising one dollar from every Canadian for cancer research. Every day, Terry ran about 26 miles on his prosthetic leg, enduring snow, rain, and heat.
