Once the best-known border crossing during the Cold War, Checkpoint Charlie, or “Checkpoint C“, remains standing today as a memorial site. But it was once the location of several daring escapes by East Germans. After World War II, countries with socialist states were imposing emigration restrictions to prevent a brain drain within their communities. With the inner German border closed, East Germans began leaving for West Germany through Berlin’s sector border. As a response, East German official
