Some Animals Recognise Themselves in Mirrors What if self-awareness isn’t uniquely human? Some animals can look in a mirror… and realise they’re seeing themselves. This ability is tested using the mirror self-recognition test. A visible mark is placed on an animal’s body where it can only be seen in a mirror. If the animal uses the reflection to investigate or touch the mark, it suggests a level of self-recognition. Species that have passed include chimpanzee, bottlenose dolphin, Asian elephant,
